If you have Snapchat+ and noticed a planet when viewing a friend’s Friendship Profile, you may be wondering what it means. The answer is simpler than it first appears: Snapchat friend planets are part of Friend Solar Systems, a Snapchat+ feature that represents your position in another person’s Best Friends list. The eight planets correspond to the eight Best Friends positions, from Mercury at number one through Neptune at number eight.
The feature turns a normal friendship ranking into a visual solar system. If someone is the “Sun,” the planet assigned to you shows where you currently sit among that person’s top Snapchat connections. It is important, though, not to confuse this with Snapchat’s separate astrology features. Friend planets are about Snapchat interaction and Best Friends ranking, not zodiac compatibility or your birth chart.
What Are Snapchat Friend Planets?
Snapchat friend planets are the planets used in Snapchat+’s Friend Solar System feature.
Snapchat says Best Friends are the people you Snap and Chat with most, with up to eight people included. The Friend Solar System assigns one planet to each of those positions. When you tap the Best Friends badge on a Friendship Profile, Snapchat can show which planet you occupy in that person’s solar system.
The basic idea is:
Your friend = the Sun
You = one of the eight planets
Your planet = your position in their Best Friends list
So if you see Mercury, you occupy the first position. If you see Neptune, you occupy the eighth position.
This is why searches such as “Snapchat planets meaning,” “Snapchat friend planets,” “Snapchat planets in order,” and “what does Mercury mean on Snapchat” all lead back to the same Friend Solar System feature.
Snapchat Planets in Order
Here is the complete Snapchat friend planets list:
| Position | Snapchat Planet | Meaning |
| #1 | Mercury | Their #1 Best Friend |
| #2 | Venus | Their #2 Best Friend |
| #3 | Earth | Their #3 Best Friend |
| #4 | Mars | Their #4 Best Friend |
| #5 | Jupiter | Their #5 Best Friend |
| #6 | Saturn | Their #6 Best Friend |
| #7 | Uranus | Their #7 Best Friend |
| #8 | Neptune | Their #8 Best Friend |
The sequence follows the normal order of the eight planets from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Snapchat’s own support documentation confirms that each planet represents a different position in the Best Friends list.
The easiest way to remember the Snapchat planet order
Mercury → Venus → Earth → Mars → Jupiter → Saturn → Uranus → Neptune
Or simply:
1 = Mercury
2 = Venus
3 = Earth
4 = Mars
5 = Jupiter
6 = Saturn
7 = Uranus
8 = Neptune
The closer the planet is to the Sun, the higher the corresponding Best Friends position.

What Does Each Snapchat Planet Mean?
1. Mercury: #1 Best Friend
Mercury represents the first position in the Friend Solar System.
If you are someone’s Mercury, you are currently occupying the highest position among their eight Best Friends.
This is the closest planet to the Sun in the real solar system, which makes it a straightforward choice for Snapchat’s first position.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #1 Best Friend.
2. Venus: #2 Best Friend
Venus represents position #2.
If you appear as Venus in someone’s Friend Solar System, one person currently occupies the position above you, while you are second among the eight Best Friends represented by the system.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #2 Best Friend.
3. Earth: #3 Best Friend
Earth represents position #3.
Seeing Earth means you currently occupy the third position in that person’s Friend Solar System.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #3 Best Friend.
4. Mars: #4 Best Friend
Mars represents position #4.
You are still inside the person’s eight-position Best Friends group, but three positions are ahead of you.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #4 Best Friend.
5. Jupiter: #5 Best Friend
Jupiter represents position #5.
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun in our solar system, so Snapchat uses it for the fifth Best Friends position.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #5 Best Friend.

6. Saturn: #6 Best Friend
Saturn represents position #6.
If Saturn appears for you, you’re currently in the sixth position of that person’s Friend Solar System.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #6 Best Friend.
7. Uranus: #7 Best Friend
Uranus represents position #7.
This puts you near the outer end of the eight Best Friends positions.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #7 Best Friend.
8. Neptune: #8 Best Friend
Neptune represents position #8.
Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun, so it represents the eighth position in Snapchat’s Friend Solar System.
Snapchat meaning: You are their #8 Best Friend.
Being Neptune does not mean someone is necessarily an unimportant friend in real life. It simply represents the lowest of the eight Best Friends positions at that particular point in time.
How Does Snapchat Friend Solar System Work?
The feature is tied to Snapchat+, Snapchat’s paid subscription service. Snapchat currently lists Solar System among its Snapchat+ features.
The process is essentially:
- You and another person are friends on Snapchat.
- Your Snapchat activity contributes to Best Friends rankings.
- If you are among that person’s eight Best Friends, you can have a planet in their Friend Solar System.
- Your position determines which planet represents you.
- The planet can change as your Snapchat interaction changes.
Snapchat describes Best Friends as people you Snap and Chat with most, and says the Best Friends list is updated regularly.
That last point matters. Your Snapchat planet is not a permanent friendship label.

How to Check Your Snapchat Friend Planet?
If you have Snapchat+ and the feature is available on your account, you can check your position through a friend’s Friendship Profile.
A typical process is:
- Open Snapchat.
- Go to the profile of the friend you want to check.
- Open their Friendship Profile.
- Look for the Best Friends badge with the gold ring.
- Tap the badge.
- Snapchat will show your position in their Friend Solar System if you are represented there.
Snapchat’s official support documentation specifically says that Snapchat+ subscribers can tap the Best Friends badge to see which planet they are in another person’s Solar System.
Why can’t I see the planets?
There are several possible reasons.
- You may not have Snapchat+.
- You may not be among that person’s eight Best Friends.
- Friend Solar System may be switched off.
- Your Snapchat app may need an update.
- The feature may not currently be available or configured on your account.
- You may be looking at a different friendship or profile feature.
One particularly important detail is that Friend Solar System is turned off by default for first-time Snapchat+ subscribers. Snapchat says it can be switched on or off through Snapchat+ feature management.
Do You Need Snapchat+ to See Snapchat Friend Planets?
Yes, Friend Solar System is a Snapchat+ feature.
Snapchat lists Solar System among the exclusive features included with Snapchat+.
This is different from ordinary Snapchat Best Friends. Snapchat’s regular Best Friends system can exist without Snapchat+, while the visual planet representation is part of the Snapchat+ experience.
That distinction explains why one person may see friend planets while another person using regular Snapchat does not.
Are Snapchat Planets Based on How Much You Talk?
Broadly, the planet reflects your position in the Best Friends ranking, and Snapchat defines Best Friends around who you Snap and Chat with most.
However, users should avoid treating a planet as a precise friendship score.
For example, seeing someone as Mercury does not mean:
- You have a specific percentage of their attention.
- You are necessarily their closest friend in real life.
- They like you more than everyone else.
- You have the strongest relationship outside Snapchat.
It is better understood as a Snapchat activity-based ranking indicator.
That distinction is one of the most useful things to understand about the feature.

Does My Snapchat Planet Mean the Same Thing for Both of Us?
No.
This is an easy point to misunderstand.
Suppose you are Mercury in your friend’s Friend Solar System. That means you hold the #1 position from their perspective.
It does not automatically mean they are Mercury in your Friend Solar System.
For example:
| Your position in their system | Their position in your system |
| Mercury #1 | Saturn #6 |
| Venus #2 | Mercury #1 |
| Earth #3 | Venus #2 |
Friend Solar Systems are viewed from the account whose Friendship Profile you are examining.
So the ranking can be different in each direction.
Can Your Snapchat Planet Change?
Yes.
Snapchat says Best Friends are updated regularly. Since the Friend Solar System represents positions within that Best Friends group, your planet can change as your position changes.
Imagine you were previously:
Mars = #4
After spending considerably more time snapping and chatting with that person, you might move to:
Venus = #2
Likewise, if your interaction decreases while other friendships become more active, you could move outward.
This is why it is better to view the planet as a current snapshot of Snapchat interaction, rather than a permanent status.

Snapchat Friend Planets vs Friend Emojis
These features are related to Snapchat friendships but are not identical.
| Feature | What it represents |
| Friend Solar System | Your position among someone’s Best Friends |
| Friend Emojis | Snapchat indicators associated with friendship activity |
| Best Friends | People you Snap and Chat with most |
| Snapstreak | Consecutive days of Snapping |
| Friendship Profile | Information and features connected to a specific friendship |
| Astrology Profile | Astrological information based on birth details |
Snapchat says Friend Emojis can appear based on how you and your friends use Snapchat, while Best Friends are the people you Snap and Chat with most.
So a planet is not simply another Friend Emoji. It belongs specifically to the Friend Solar System.
Snapchat Friend Planets vs Snapchat Astrology
This is another common source of confusion.
Snapchat has an Astrological Profile feature that uses information such as your birthday, time of birth and place of birth. Snapchat says the feature covers ten astrological planets and provides an Astrology Profile Summary.
Friend Solar System is completely different.
| Snapchat feature | Purpose |
| Friend Solar System | Shows your Best Friends position |
| Astrology Profile | Shows astrological information |
| Astrological Compatibility | Compares certain astrology-based friendship characteristics |
| Friend Emojis | Reflect friendship interactions |
So if someone searches for “Snapchat friend planets meaning”, they are usually looking for Friend Solar System rather than astrology.

Is Pluto a Snapchat Friend Planet?
No.
Snapchat’s Friend Solar System uses eight planets:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Pluto is not one of the eight positions in this system. Snapchat’s official support guide lists those eight planets for Friend Solar Systems.
This makes the system particularly easy to remember because it mirrors the commonly taught eight-planet order of our solar system.
What Is the Difference Between Best Friends and Upcoming Best Friends?
Snapchat+ also offers an Extended Best Friends List feature.
According to Snapchat, this feature can show:
- Your current 8 Best Friends
- Your next 8 Upcoming Best Friends
- Movement up or down since the previous check
This is useful because the Friend Solar System only represents the eight Best Friends positions. The extended list can provide additional context about people who are approaching that group.
For example, someone who is currently outside the eight may be moving upward, even though they do not yet have a planet in your Friend Solar System.
Snapchat Planets and #1 Best Friend Are Not Exactly the Same Feature
Snapchat+ also includes a #1 Best Friend feature that lets subscribers privately pin one person as their #1 Best Friend. Snapchat says this pinned person is visible only to the subscriber.
That means you should distinguish between:
Friend Solar System: a visual representation of Best Friends positions.
Pinned #1 Best Friend: a Snapchat+ feature allowing you to privately pin one person as your #1 Best Friend.
They are connected to Snapchat’s friendship system, but they serve different purposes.

What Your Snapchat Planet Does Not Tell You?
A common mistake is reading too much into the planet.
Your planet does not reliably tell you:
- How much someone cares about you personally
- Whether you’re their best friend outside Snapchat
- Whether they are romantically interested in you
- Whether they talk to you more than anyone in person
- How long the friendship will last
- Whether they have chosen you as their favorite person
It is a platform-specific ranking.
If you’re Mercury, that’s interesting. If you’re Neptune, it doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong with the friendship.
The most accurate interpretation is simply:
Your Snapchat planet shows your position within that person’s Best Friends group.
Why Snapchat Uses Planets for Friends?
The design works because the metaphor is immediately understandable.
The real solar system has a clear order:
Sun → Mercury → Venus → Earth → Mars → Jupiter → Saturn → Uranus → Neptune
Snapchat maps that structure onto its Best Friends system:
Friend → Mercury → Venus → Earth → Mars → Jupiter → Saturn → Uranus → Neptune
The closer the planet is to the center, the higher the represented position.
This gives users a visual shortcut instead of displaying a plain numerical ranking.
A Simple Example
Imagine you open your friend’s Friendship Profile and discover that your Friendmoji appears as Jupiter.
You do not need to calculate anything.
Jupiter is the fifth planet in the sequence.
Therefore:
Jupiter = #5
You are currently the fifth person in that friend’s Best Friends ranking represented by the Friend Solar System.
If you later become Venus:
Venus = #2
Your position has moved upward.
If you later become Neptune:
Neptune = #8
Your position has moved toward the outer end of the eight-person ranking.

Why Your Planet Might Suddenly Change?
Several normal changes in Snapchat activity can affect Best Friends rankings.
For example:
- You start chatting with someone much more frequently.
- You exchange more Snaps with another friend.
- Another friend becomes more active with you.
- Your conversations decrease.
- Your Snapchat usage changes.
- Your overall interaction pattern changes.
Because Best Friends are updated regularly, the resulting planet can change over time.
So don’t assume that a change from Venus to Mars means a friendship has suddenly become bad. It can simply reflect changes in activity.
